Bound manuscript diary kept by Henry Herman Schroeder while attending St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. Entries made from October 29, 1860 to March 23, 1862 provide an almost daily record of Schroeder's class work, social, and sporting activities from age 15 to age 17. Schroeder provides his grades, descriptions of class recitations with several teachers including headmaster Henry Coit, and notes about reading material, sermons, and religious services conducted for the students. He includes an ongoing account of his finances, including money received as gifts from named individuals and his expenditures, as well as details about his participation in various sports and games, including ice-skating, bowling, chess, swimming, hockey, sleighing, backgammon, and baseball. Other entries describe holiday festivities and regular social dances.
